O mein Papà, happy birthday!

Today celebrates my father and we are not together yet. Here is the last year in photos, together with previous birthday posts in blogging memories where one photo is from Moscow 1964.

Considering the strangeness of times, let alone the fact that I write to you in English from Italy by way of my blog so that the whole world can see, we were lucky to catch some together times last year after all.

It culminated with the four days under the Julian Alps in hotel Alpina in Kranjska Gora, but let’s start the gallery with your last year’s birthday. You looked mighty stylish.

  • Inspired design idea: yours.
  • You had lots of ties “za porabit”, to finish off.
  • Inspired focaccia by sister.
  • Inspired two cakes, also by sister.
  • She knows what you like. One better than the other. (This is just an expression! Both were excellent!).
  • “Autonomy of the editor”. That’s what you were most of your working years, editor of this and that.
  • Unsurprisingly, you were (again) the big winner of our annual card tournament. Hurrah!
  • This year we need to order a bigger trophy, right?
  • Then came our four days in August. First stop was in Gozd Martuljek.
  • You found a friend.
  • The weather was not really ideal. Kranjska Gora is always pretty though.
  • Nearby Lake Jasna.
  • We found a good place to eat on the way to the Vrata valley. Vrata means Door.
  • Zelenci nature reserve is beautiful. It was my first time.
  • Nordic Centre Planica with an assortment of ski jump hills.
  • Some jumpers were practicing, girls and boys.
  • The stairs in the middle bring you to the start of the zipline. That is NOT where you are heading.
  • Rather it was ice-cream calling you.
  • A display of how it used to be. Now they have a chairlift and this is what we took next (except mom and bestia who remained in the valley below).
  • On top of the ski hill, observing the start of the zipline. It looked quite scary.
  • We preferred to descend this way. Quite scenic. Sister joined us for the day.
  • Next day we had to go home already, by way of mountain pass Vršič and its 50 turns.
  • This is Russian Chapel, built by Russian WWI. prisoners.
  • One of my favourite photos of you. You and mountains go together well.
  • The Julian Alps are majestic. On the other side of the Vršič pass is the beautiful Trenta valley.
  • River Soča (or Isonzo), famous for its WWI. front and its elusive colour. Bestia had a drink and met a friend.
  • Saying goodbye. We haven’t seen each other since August.
  • And this is how beautifully you repainted the garden set in Piran in March and sent me this photo. It’s been my desktop background ever since.

Happy birthday, Papà, babbo, oči B.! And here is what I’d sing to you if I could sing like this. But you know that I’m more like Janis. Na zdravje – to health, and joy won’t be far behind.

  12. Manja, this is a superb post. Thank you so much for letting the blogosphere into your family memories and allowing us to feel part of such a warm family. I hope your Papa celebrates a birthday full of love and happiness today.

      1. Thank you for alerting me to the fact that my url doesn’t appear. I shall get on to WP about this. I got this new computer 2 months ago and I’ve had a lot of problems with my site. WP says it’s the manufacturer’s fault, they say it’s HPs fault. Poor me in the middle just gets the problems!

      2. Ahh, sorry to hear this. But I think you can go to the Account settings on your profile and change your Primary site so that it shows the URL of your blog. At least I hope you can… And I hope everything resolves eventually.
